Dialup Access
The most common way of using internet by a common home user is dial up access. Through dial up access, you will connect to internet by using a modem and regular phone line. Generally a modem is internally attached with your computer, while almost all the homes have local telephone lines. Through this telephone line your computer will be connected with the ISP (internet service provider) modem. To access the ISP modem, they will give you a unique user id and password. You will connect with your dialup internet access providers by access number that is provided along with user name and password. After verification of user name and password, the ISP computer is connected with your computer. The major feature of dialup access is that, you will connect to your ISP by using standard phone line; almost all the homes have this local connection. These phone lines transfer data in shape of analog signals, but computer will generate digital signals. Then how these digital signals are transferred over analog wires? To solve this problem the computer generated digital data is modulated into analog signals before transmitting, for this purpose modem is used. The receiving computer will demodulate this analog signal into digital signals and the receiving end understands the data. The process of modulation and demodulation will generate some noises that you can listen when you dial your modem for establishing internet connection with your dialup internet provider. Along with this process, rules and regulations are also defined, as your modem can only use limited bandwidth of the wire. A typical modem can transfer 56 kbps per second, but you can transfer data lower then this maximum speed. 56k dial up access is the maximum speed that you can achieve by using a regular modem, while you can not get more then 48kbps, if all the conditions are true. Before taking any dial up connection, some precautions should be keep in mind. Ensure that the access number that you are using is local, as by using international connection your modem performance might be low. Check out the price of using internet, as it varies from ISP to ISP; always consider cheap dialup internet providers. In the cities the cost of internet is low as there are many companies working at the same time. Due to competition they decrease there internet prices as compared to rural areas. However the dial up access is considered best for home user, through this connection a user not only get reliable internet services but also this internet service is affordable. |
